While his story isn’t as well known today as it was a generation ago, the short life and sacrificial death of Jim Elliot and his four young missionary friends in 1956 at the hands of the Auca Indians in Ecuador inspired countless young men and women across North America to dedicate their lives to bringing the message of Christ to people around the world. The now famous line Jim wrote in the journal he kept to record his thoughts as he read through the Bible became a rallying call for many: “He is no fool who gives what he cannot keep to gain that which he cannot lose.”
Today the Scriptures are still providing answers and inspiration to those who faithfully and regularly read its timeless wisdom and universal truths. This year I invite you to join me and many others in our congregation as we make Bible reading as integral to our daily spiritual lives as the things we do to sustain us physically. Along with the text of God’s Word we will have accompanying devotionals for personal reflection built around highlighted passages from The Poverty and Justice Bible.
Let’s make 2012 a year when we collectively discover God’s plan for our church family and each of us commits to making a difference in Christ’s name in our homes, our community and our world.
